What is the CCSE exam?
The Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain test (CCSE) is produced by Instituto Cervantes. It assesses knowledge of the Spanish Constitution and Spanish social and cultural life and, subject to the exemptions established by law, forms part of the process of applying for Spanish nationality by residence.
It is not a speaking or writing exam. Every answer is closed-format: you choose one of three options or mark a statement true or false. Wrong and unanswered questions do not lose points.
CCSE 2026 exam dates
The official 2026 calendar lists ordinary sessions in Spain from January to July and from September to November. Always check the exam date, registration deadline and available places directly with Instituto Cervantes.

Instituto Cervantes publishes results approximately 20 days after the test in the candidate’s private account.
Exam format: 25 questions in 45 minutes
The exam contains 25 questions across five tasks. You need at least 15 correct answers—60% of the total—to receive an APTO (pass) result. Each correct answer scores one point; wrong and unanswered questions score zero.

CCSE 2026 syllabus
The content is divided into two main sections with different weightings:
Government, law and citizenship
State institutions, the Constitution, rights and duties, civic participation, territorial organisation and geography.
Culture, history and society
Traditions, historical events, culture, daily life, social behaviour and common administrative procedures.

Instituto Cervantes replaced 25% of the questions compared with 2025. For any exam held from January 2026, study the 2026 edition and its official bank of 300 questions, not a collection from an earlier year.

- Start with the official manual. Read it once to recognise the five task types and key vocabulary.
- Practise by topic. Separate institutions and law from culture, society and procedures to identify gaps.
- Review every mistake. Memorising an answer without understanding the error makes the same pattern more likely to repeat.
- Finish with mock exams. Answer 25 questions in 45 minutes and aim to score above 15 consistently, not just once.
